Academic Advising

Mayville State University offers academic advising to all of our students. The mission of Mayville State advising is to partner with students to develop and realize plans that are consistent with education, career and life goals.

For freshmen, we offer a course titled Seminar on Success (SOS) that meets once each week. The student’s academic advisor is his or her instructor for the one credit, letter-graded course. Topics such as future course planning, career decision making, mental and physical health, time and money management, service learning and academic skills are emphasized during the course. Through the SOS instructor/advisor, and with the help of MSU peer leaders, the incoming freshman student receives assistance in acclimating to the university, becoming engaged in the school and community and fulfilling their potential at Mayville State.

The university has an academic advising syllabus for on-campus advising which introduces academic advising, lists responsibilities of the advisee and advisor,

student learning outcomes for advising, important materials for advising, resources and a calendar. If a student wishes to change his or her major and/or advisor, the process is outlined in the academic advising syllabus.
